Caroline,  I am not a medical professional and cannot offer you medical advice.  I would strongly suggest you see a doctor because your symptoms sound like those of severe hypoglycemia.  You need to know for sure if that's the case and learn how to treat your condition.  You can find information on hypoglycemia and its effects at the JDRF website (I've provided the link, though you may have to copy and paste it into your browser)

http://www.jdrf.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.viewPage&page_id=EC327415-2A5E-7B6E-108A43FF1CBEB305

I will see if I can come up with additional information, but the best advice I can offer you right now is to have a doctor diagnose your condition and then learn as much as you can about it.
Please let us know how you're doing!

Caroline,
What you describe does sound like a hypoglycemic reaction, and I urge you to talk to a doc right away. It sounds as tho' you & your current doc don't work well together, so you may need to find another.  In time, you may benefit from working with a nutritionist who specializes in whatever condition it turns out you have.

In the short term, please avoid alcohol.  Given your experiences, adding alcohol to the mix sounds deadly to me.  That likely won't have to be a lifelong avoidance, but alcohol will certainly worsen any lows you get, and they sound very bad already.

I am not a physician, but from what I've learned about hypoglycemia, it is very important to include protein (tho' that protein can surely come from plants) in your diet.  It is also very important to avoid highly processed sweets & fast acting carbohydrates.

Finally, find a book store or library close to you and visit the health/diet section, so you can begin to benefit from what docs & nutritionists & other patients ahve learned about foods & hypoglycemia.

It sounds as tho' you've been dealing with this problem off & on for many years.  It also sounds like you're ready now, as a young adult to begin to take good care of "whatever it is" and that's great.  I think you'll always be happy about making this decision to take care of you.
