Poor guy. Its diabeties and its the *****. I went through the same before i was diagnosed.
Hey--not a doc. Just a diabetic for 23 (almost 24) years. You might also go to the pharmacy and pick up a bottle of ketone/glucose strips. You take one and dip it in a urine sample or you can just stick it in the stream (sorry--graphic, but anyway). Anyone can run ketones as I understand it (Atkins dieters love those strips...grrr). But it may be revealing if you are running ketones and spilling glucose as well. Do non-diabetics spill glucose at all? Not a doc, but I don't think so. Good luck to you...as GiJoe says...knowing is half the battle (hokey, I know).
Go to somebody you know who has diabetes. Ask them to use their glucometer to check your blood sugar level. If it is above 150 mg/dL, wash your hands, dry your hands, and test your blood sugar level again. If it is still above 150, go either to your doctor or to the hospital.
What you describe as weight loss than you can't do anything to get but up to normal can be diabetes, as is the frequent urinantion. The frequent urination comes from the body tryting tto digest the nbodies fat cell for energy since you are not using insulin to digest injested food, thus the weight loss. You may also notice excessive thirst and fatigue. These are symptoms of type one dibetes which doesn't have as much of a family history ar type two. Type two used to be called adult onset and type one juvenile.
They are actually two different diseases as the cause of type two is usually the body resisting the insulin it produces. Type one is a breakdown in the auto immune system, why it is also call immune mediated diabetes, where the body starts to attack the cells in the pancrease that make insulin and i don't think it has quite the herdetary aspect that is more typical in type two.
i would recommend you contact a doctor as the test to check if it is diabetes is a simple blood test and the earlier you know you have it the faster you can bring your body back uner normal blood sugar ranges, which they have found keeping the blood sugar as close to normal helps prevent many of the complications of diabetes. God luck and keep a positive attitude no matter what. bret
