hi, we are family from indonesia, pontianak. we are unlucky becouse we have very limited medical facility.

fact :
-my mum , 71. she have a diabetes for ten years.
-three months ago she done a surgery to lift up her "sand" in her gall gland. sorry I really not know how to said it in english.
-her post surgery recovery was not good, her condition decrease quickly. while we witnessed another patient at the same age recover normally.
-two month ago her leg begin to swollen, increase in size. so we consult to doctor and the doctor give her a medicine. the medicine doing good for a month (the foot stop swollen). But her condition become more decreased. Body weight decreased very much.
-this monday, she felt very tired and send to hospital. and from this point her leg become to swollen out of control. not only her leg, her below boy part also become swollen, increased in size. hardly can eat (only a few spoon of rice), only drink water and liquid infus.

here her lab test today (05 sept 07)

- thrombocytes = 85.000
- haemoglobin = 13
- sugar contain in blood  = 108
- blood presure = 110/85
- temp = 36 C

the test she already do :
- rontgen / radiology = found water in her lungs

local doctor diagnosed = liver failure, but the cause of her body become swollen is unknown.

so, please help us to diagnosed my mum disease, especially to stop the swollen (size increased) things becouase now her legs become almost twice bigger than before.

Heart disease can also cause swelling of legs and feet. Has her heart function been checked by her doctor? Just one more idea.

Type 1 diabetes is where the person is dependent upon insulin to live.  The person's pancreas has stopped producing insulin, which the body needs to deliver the glucose in the blood stream to the muscles which need it to operate.  With type 2 diabetes, as I understand it, the body still produces insulin but has forgotten how to use it.  Type 2 diabetes is normally controlled by diet and exercise, and sometimes pills, but extreme cases can require insulin.

Swelling of the feet is many times caused by poor circulation.  In people with diabetes, poor circulation is caused by neuropathy, which is caused by prolonged high blood sugars.  There are specific things your doctor can do to treat neuropathy, if that is the cause.  Has she had high blood sugars for a long time?

Hello.  I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes, so your question is hard for me to answer.  You say your mother has diabetes, but in none of the descriptions of her conditions do you refer to that.  Does she have type 1 or type 2 diabetes?  What are her blood sugar scores from testing?  Does she take insulin?  That kind of information is what helps us answer questions like yours from a diabetes perspective.
