I started Victoza about a month ago. Started out at the lowest dose and am now at 1.8. My dr. put me on it because my a1c was 9.9 with taking Januvia, Lantus and glimipiride. I started experiencing low bs in he morning so decided to drop the second glimipiride. My numbers are great now. I had to stop metformin because I also have ckd. I am having problems with sour stomach and gas. Sometimes not too bad and other times, terrible. Hoping this will all subside after my system gets adjusted. My appetite isn't good but I manage to eat enough.
I'm going to start Victoza on 21/10/2013, not looking forward to the side effects that most people get when they first go on it, lets hope it gets my blood sugar below 7, also taking Metformin and Gliz!
I've been usiing Victoza for 10 days. I started with 0.6 mg for the first week and am now on the 1.2 mg dosage. So far I have had nausea and headaches and a sore throat. (I could be getting a sinus infection, too). None of my side effects have been major. Noticeable but not horrible. Remember you may not experience any of them. My blood sugars have dropped from high 200's - mid 300's to avg 170's. I am very grateful for the drop in BG levels. As I understand it the first six seeks are the worst as far a side effects go. After the body becomes acclimated to the medication, the side effects diminish. Good luck to both of us with this. Hope it does the trick.
Headaches!!! Daily all day!!! Do I stop?!?
I have been on Victoza for years and didn't think I had any side effects and my sugar levels were the best they've been in years so I have been really happy with doing the daily injections. I started out on the lowest dose,0.6. Gradually the dosage increased to 1.2. Just recently I was taken off of Glyburide and increased my Victoza dosage to the larger dose. My doctor thought this would help me to lose weight since I've been gaining, not losing. About a week after the increase in Victoza I got really sick. I've had indigestion / intestional problems for years but it has gradually been getting worse. When I got sick I attributted it to the Victoza increase. My doctor told me to go off of Victoza for a couple days, go to the low dose for a couple days, increase to the next dose for a couple days and then go back to the larger dose and see if it makes me ill so that I can rule out the Victoza. I've been off of Victoza for 2 days now and I haven't needed any medication (Zantac, Tums, Pepto-Bismol, etc.) for my stomach at all. I've decided to prolong the absence of Victoza over the weekend and see how my stomach does. About 5 months ago my doctor put me on a Gluten-free diet because he thought I might be gluten-sensitive. For a couple months I did feel better but then the same old stomach problems started returning even though I have been strict about going gluten-free. Now I'm wondering if it has been the Victoza all along making me ill? Maybe I don't need to be gluten-free either.
"...how long before the side affects kick in."
Many people have no, or minor, side effects.
"..should I see better BS right away if it is going to work?"
For oral diabetes medication to work properly it requires making lifestyle changes; eating a proper diabetic diet that is sugar free and low in carbohydrates, and more, maintaining normal body weight, maintaining a normal lipid panel, and performing daily 30-60 minutes of exercise.
