Hello, my husband was told his fasting levels were 5x what they should be. He has high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and asthma also. His Dr. put him on 500mg Metformin 2x daily. He has been taking it for 5 years now and has had no trouble. Only side effect was alot of diarrhea at first. Please take waveriders advice also, he seems very knowledgable and has helped me out on a couple of issues! Good luck to you!!
I don't know much about Metfornin. When I was diagnosed I went on a 60 carb per meal limit and as a result my doctor calls me a success story. No meds. Having a friend who lost his leg to Type 2, I was more worried about that. Get those readings down. That should scare you.
Reread the last sentence "If you ignore getting this disease under control and managed they will arise and take over your life." It doesn't make sense.
It should read, "If you ignore this disease and let it go uncontrolled and mismanaged serious side effects will arise and take over your life."
"my fasting levels are 9 times higher than normal"
Your levels are in the 900 mg/dl [50 mmol/l] range? That is a deadly level to be at. Please take the time and educate yourself about diabetes control, management and diets. Also, perform 30 minutes of physical daily exercise, like walking, to help lower your glucose levels. Ask your doctor for a referral to a diabetes educator/class and a diabetes nutritionist/dietician to help you understand what to eat and what not to eat, portion sizes, etc.
" what side effects are there?"
Some of the most common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, indigestion, and headaches. I suggest you use Google to search on 'Metformin side effects'.
By the way, most people do not experience any side effects so please put your fear aside. What you should be really afraid of is type 2 diabetes sides effects. If you ignore getting this disease under control and managed they will arise and take over your life. Good luck.
