You know, this is a weird thought, but I'm wondering if there is still some kind of issue with the surgery area that can't be seen with the naked eye. I wonder if another x-ray or even a CT scan might give your vet something to work with instead of continuing to blindly throw antibiotics at it.
I feel so badly for your poor dog. I can't imagine how miserable he is with his snout swollen shut. When is it you can get in to see the surgeon again?
oh, we have did a culture twice. both times it was the same sort of bacteria. but the anitibiotics for that bacteria have not been working!
I went back to the vet for some diffrent antibiotics and steriods. poor guy's nose is so swollen he cannot even breath!
Oh what a shame! It seems the stars are conspiring against you, doesn't it? Sounds like it's time to have a culture done to determine exactly what bacteria is causing the trouble. Clavamox is good stuff, so you obviously need to determine the specific bacteria in order to get a specific medication to conquer it. Keep us posted on what happens, and I hope it won't take too long to get to the bottom of it. :-)
Oh, I forgot to mention that i did take him to another vet in the mean time. He is on clavamox, but its not doing anything! His normal vet is in mexico on vacation.
His surgery was done a little over a month ago, probably almost two months ago. He has had his post op follow up and the vet said that he looked great. Too bad he is already starting to go down hill again.
You are right to be worried. Since you can't get him in to the surgeon for a week, at least let another other vet examine him. It sounds like he needs antibiotics in the meantime until the surgeon can evaluate the surgery area. If you have an ER clinic near you, that would be another good option.
How long ago was the surgery done? If he already had his post-op followup and was cleared at that time, they're treating this as a new illness and that's why they're making you wait.
