Dog Moaning when Lying Down

Hi, I have a 6 year old Leonberger girl (entire) who has been moaning in the process of laying down and when she has just lain down. I have been to the Vet and had x-Rays done, bloods and also two ten day trials of different pain relief for arthritis but to no avail. I really don't know what to do.  She eats, plays and swims with enthusiasm however looks sad.  She will often just sit and look at me rather than laying down as if she is asking me to help.  Friends who know her well and who have the same breed have also noted it and are worried for her too. I really don't know what to do.  Any suggestions are welcome.

It sounds like a pretty thorough work up has been done in regards to blood tests and x-Rays.  I think I would ask that the ultrasound can be done.  Ask if your Vet can do this or woukd you need a referral out.  Had to have US done on my Grey some years ago and went to another Vet who has the equipment and it very good at doing them.  Going to a Chiropractor may not be a bad idea. They can often find possible problem areas the Vet cannot.
Goid luck and please keep us posted.

Love that breed but one does not see them around here, just too hot.
I assume x-rays were taken of the hops for possible dysplasia? Could be arthritis.  You might want to make sure he us on a Senior diet and possibly start some supplements like Glucosomine and Omega 3.  Consult with your Vet about this.  There are medications that help but the dog should be monitored.
Other option might be fir your Vet to do an Ultrasound to see if it can be determined if something might be going on with the abdominal organs.
See if there is a Leonberger National Club web site.  Some have very good information listed for health problems that can be breed specific.  You might also be able to contact breeders that may be of help.
Good luck and please come back to update.

Hi Margot,
Thank you for your reply.  I hadn't noticed your comment so resubmitted my question.  First time user of Medhelp.  I have had Holly to the Vet and sedated to X-ray and check her back, chest, hips, take bloods etc.  I also have had her on two trials of pain relief in case it is arthritis but to no avail.  Her hips have come up clear and the I think she should have an ultrasound too even though my Vet hasn't suggested it. My other Leonberger has just gone blind and is not very well so I wonder if that could be a factor although I doubt it.  I was thinking of having her checked out by local chiropractor who has done wonders with Newfoundlands and horses but am hesitant to take her there before knowing the cause I case it is organ related.  Good idea to call a breeder, I have looked at Leonberger sites and books but nothing specific relating to her symptoms.
My girls are 6 and 7 and only getting health issues now. Lovely breed, gentle giants.
