Dog neuter

We just lost our 2 yr old doberman after a simple neuter. He came home and seemed to be in pain but thought it was normal from neuter. He drank tons of water but again thought it was from fasting from neuter. He got worse. Rushed to vet but he died after going into shock. They think that from blood work drawn the kidney levels were elevated by about triple from pre  op. Bloodwork. They believe he twisted his intestine. He was very deep chested and the stress of the surgery. I am devastated. Blame myself for getting him neutered. But we have another Dobe puppy that will be here in about a month. She was to be his playmate. I miss him so much. My heart hurts. Just wonder if anyone has had this experience.

Sorry. Must have explained it wrong. I did see blood work. The blood work prior to surgery showed normal levels. After surgery at er bloodwork drawn showed triple blood levels. The twist they think happened possibly due to stress and then drinking lots of water. He has always been healthy.  No never drank excessive water prior. The breeder is a very reputable breeder and has many champions. It is all so sad and doesn't seem to make any sense to me. I just hurt so much. Thank you for posting. Sorry I didn't explain better. I'm just so broke hearted.

Welcome...First, let me tell you how sorry I am for your loss....It's hard enough to loose an older one, much less one so young...My heart goes out to you!

Neutering is a fairly simple procedure....Yes, sometimes complications arise, but it's usually from an underlying illness....There's something very wrong here! The reason the pre-op bloodwork is run, is to determine Kidney/Liver function & access whether a dog is healthy enough for a surgery....

Do you have the paperwork on the blood work to check levels yourself??
This Vet is an idiot!!!! If indeed the Kidney Levels were tripled, then surgery should NEVER have been preformed....The reason he/she took blood was for this reason and this reason alone!!!! To decide if it would kill your dog or not!!!!

Yet, he/she chose to go ahead w/the surgery and risk your dog's life?? That doesn't make sense.....Then, he told you about the levels (After the fact)....That even makes worse sense!!!!

You need the paperwork in your hands to see what these levels were....I think your Vet made it up!! No Vet would have gone on w/the surgery!!! That's against the laws of practice!!!  Did he lie about this as in making up excuses???

Twisted Intestine??? That's not possible!!! This dog was fasted....Food/feeding causes bloat!! Empty stomach does not....

There are 2 possibilities here....Blood clot after surgery.....Not common, but can happen after any surgery....Or this guy already had an undetected Kidney disease and no one knew it!!! If this last is the case, then be very cautious of getting a puppy from this same line or same breeder......They will lie to you, too, if they must!!!

Has your dog ever had bloodwork before this? If so, were his BUN levels normal at that time???? Abnormal intake of water can be a sign of Kidney disease/Failure.....Did your guy always drink alot? That may be your clue...

Without a necropsy, it's impossible to determine what caused his death... I would be very cautious w/using this Vet again.....I'm seeing many Red flags.....Go get a copy of your dogs bloodwork for yourself.....It may help you to decide what might have happened....

I'm so sorry for your heartache.....This WAS NOT your fault.....Sometimes, things just happen and there's nothing we can do.....Your in my prayers.......Karla

Very sad, sorry it happened.  I suggest getting a new Vet.

We have an estimated 10 year old Westie rescue that was neutered 2 years ago, and no problems.... so while better done in the first year, your dog shouldn't have had any serious problems, let alone die.

We can only go forward... bless
