Dog's skin turning black

I have a 4 year old chihuahua who has always had nice pink skin. I went to Europe for the summer and my wonderful in-laws took her to the 'burbs for three months of long walks, lake swimming and sailing. When we were reunited earlier this week the first thing I noticed was that her skin had darkened by several shades! Her belly is now a charcoal color and her ears are dark as well. Could it just be a tan? She is normally a city dog but definitely spent a significant amount of time outdoors this summer. I am worried it is something more serious but nothing else is wrong with her...same energy level, eating and drinking, sleeping...
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
