Ear mites

Can ear mites, if left untreated, cause my dog to go deaf and if so, is it permanent? I can't afford the medication my vet perscribed. My dog is really suffering, shaking his head constantly and he looks absolutely miserable. I feel like a total loser that I can't even take care of my dog thanks to this crappy economy.
If anybody has some advice, PLEASE send it along.
Axel and I thank you.

I'll save the sob story about why it's taken me over a month to get back to you. It has nothing to do with Axel. More along the lines of life having me by the throat. (AGAIN)

I did call the vet and they told me Axel was diagnosed with a yeast infection in both ears and given the Gentizol. My husband and I were very diligent about treating Axel twice a day, but by day 4 it had turned into a nightmare.I've told you all that Axel is a rescue dog. He and his brother had been horribly abused as tiny pups, shot, beat, starved and left to die in a vineyard during winter.

We have NEVER, EVER hit Axel and the only times I had to yell at him was when we first got chickens. He is very good and learns fast. I only had to yell "leave it" a few times when he was going after the chicks and he got it. Never a problem from then on.

His ear problem has returned with a vengence and has also seemed to spread to the other creatures who let us lve in the house with them. But Axel is the worst. He is miserable, looks like he's in pain, whines almost constantly and it's killing Paul and I.

The problem is, when we try to put the medication in his ears, he goes absolutely insane. He is only about 60lbs, but my huge linebacker of a husband can't keep him still long enough for me to get the stuff in his ears. He is crying and fighting like we are trying to kill him. It just kills us to do this to him, even if it is for his own good, because of his past, and because we've never been mean to him, I think that is what freaks him out more, that it's US that is "hurting" him. I know you guys understand how strong a frightened dog can be. He also had knee problems so we have to be careful we don't damage them. When I lift Axels ear flap to try and get the med squirted in, you'd think I was cutting his ear off with a dull knife. It's just so terrible to see him shaking and crying out. I never know if I've actually gotten any meds in the ear canal or not, but by this time, he is panting so hard and I get worried, both my husband and I are soaked in sweat and that's just the first ear!
I know someone here suggested one of us distracts him with a treat or chew bone, but I can tell you right now, that will not work. Trying to do this while he's napping and relaxed would last less than 1 second after I touched his hear.
We are totally at our wits end. I am so afraid Axel will give himself an oral hematoma from shaking his head so hard and for Christ's sake, we can't even afford any more of the med he needs let alone a fix for a hematoma.
I asked the vet if he would give us some tranquilizer so we could do a really thorough clean out but he said no, naturally. For a mere $490 the vet will be happy to sedate him at the hosp. and do it there. Does he not know us well enough after this many years and dozens of animals that if we could afford to have him do it, we would? I get  so angry that these people more and more seem to become vets simply for the money and it has nothing at all to do with love of animals and wanting to stop suffering. We've begged him to let us make payments but he's an A-hole about that. We;ve called other vet but because they don't know us at all, they want all the money up front.
I have the newest Fosters and Grant catalog and I see they have meds that would work and they are much cheaper than what my vet wants, but the sad bottom line is that we  still can't afford it. I can't even afford the medication I need for my heart and I'd gladly buy Axels ear meds and forgo mine, but you can't get blood out of a turnip and there just isn't any money. And I don't know how to calm Axel down to help him. I know he needs antibiotics or anti yeast stuff, but I thought if I could just wash his ears out with warm water, that  might get some of the crap out and make them feel a little better.
I'm just sick about this ,,,,,,,,,,,oh and to top things off, he now has a huge hot spot above his tail. We have been able to take care of that, more or less. I shaved the spot, got it good and clean and while I'm not using official dog hot spot medication, I have some stuff from the hospital we use on very similar skin problems. It works, that's all I know and it stops him gnawing at it and the itching. It looks much better today, but as I also said earlier, it now seems like this ear thing is sweeping through the house affecting the other mice, moose, mousers and mooches who call this dump paradise.
God ladies HELP ME PLEASE!!!!
Does anyone have some left over meds for this they could send me? I could probably pay postage. Anybody know an old voodoo yeast fix? Old wives tales?
Please help me help him
Love you guys

Linda, have you tried the trick of swabbing the ear while Axel is sleeping and relaxed?

And please...don't be down on yourself about caring for your animals.  You are not alone in that struggle, believe me.

It's been 4days since your last post.  I'll be hoping for the best and a positive update!  ♥

You are doing the best you can.
If someone else is there, see if maybe they can distract him with some treats or a chew bone while you do the ears.
Important thing is to get this treated and cleared up.
Yes, that is what we were questioning, mites or yeast?

I love you all for working so hard to find me a solution for my buds!

I will call my Vets office today and have them look at the records for what his original dx was of Axels ears.

If it WAS mites, it seems he wouldn't have given me medication for yeast infection, right? The Gentizol says nothing about mites, only yeast infections.

I wish Axel wouldn't freak out so bad so I could get a swab of the gunk in his ears. I don't know if he just doesn't like his ears being messed with or if he's in really bad pain.
I walked up behind him last night and he jumped a foot in the air. He is only about 7 years old, but he didn't hear me. I wanted to cry.........I don't deserve to own animals if I can't give them the care they need.

I'll let you know what I learn from the vets office.
You guys are the best.

Margot, I'm confused, too.....No, these should not be combined treatments......That's why I'm trying to give her a distinct description of what Ear Mites look like, so she can determine if it is indeed Mites........She really needs a diagnoses from the Vet for at least one animal.......

However, all animals in the house would not get an infection or yeast all at the same time....Mites travel quickly & more than likely the dogs got it from the cats...That's how it works! So, if indeed everyone has it, then it's probably Mites....

Anyway, I'm waiting for a response from Linda & go from there.....Thanks Margot for helping ........Karla

Thanks, Karla.  Thought it was the same but now I am confused.
Should she be treating fir the yeast infection or the mites or both consecutively?

Linda...Your Gentizol Ointment is used for Yeast Infections, Bacteria Infections AND has a Steroid in it for inflammation and itching.....It is NOT for Mites! Also, the product is known to cause deafness that goes away after treatment!!!!!

The Otomax (That Margot is talking about) is the Identical product made by someone else.....A tube is $8 (Quite a difference from $50), but you have to have a prescription from your Vet....Yes, At Fosters & Smith....

Next, At Entirely Pets.com, they have a OTC Labeled brand of drops specifically for Mites in Cats & Dogs.....It's probably the same thing your Vet would sell you...Made by Virbac (A prescription company) called Otomite Plus Ear Mite treatment.....A bottle is $5.29 & can be used for Cats, also.......Entirely pets has fair shipping prices...$4.95 I believe.....

So, again if you are sure your dealing w/ mites (Again, the discharge that forms from ear mites in the ears look like deposits of dried coffee grounds down in the ear canal), then I will proceed to give you the info. out of my book.....Let me know.......Karla

Karla, anything on the Foster and Smithnsite they can get without prescription? I think they have it from $8.00 to $29.99.  Maybe they don't need the large one.  Labeled Otomax.

Aside from that, you might try adding a probiotic daily for the yeast infection.

Linda, I have your answer, but this will ONLY work for ear mites! It's out of my favorite book...I will do it in two parts as I'm going to type it word for word out of the book...There will be 2 phases of treatment, but you can start the first part for days while you prepare for the second part.....

I have to go to town right now, but will be back to get you started.......Karla

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
My husband originally took Axel in for the exam and now I'm not positive the diagnosis was ear mites. The vet put some stuff in his ears and then gave the bottle to my husband. Looking at it now, it's called "Gentizol," and on the back it says it's for yeast infection!
Axel is a 60 pound Shepard/Sheltie cross and while not huge by any means, he is very strong and fights like a pole-cat when we try to put the drops in. It takes both of us to attempt this and he is crying and struggling so hard, we're never sure if we've actually gotten any of the medication into the ear canal. It's very frustrating, but Axel was a rescue dog who was beaten, shot and left to die in a snow covered field. It is very disturbing for us to hold him down as he is crying not from pain but fear. It breaks my heart. I wish we could afford to just have the vet put him under and really get in there and clean his ears out. We've now noticed that our rescued weener and a couple of the cats are showing signs of this as well.
We are at our wits end but won't give up,,,,,,,,we are almost out of the med the doc gave us and a refill costs about $50. Not much, but we simply don't have it, it might as well be $5,000.
Any old fashioned remeides out there we can try? Any ideas at all. I can't take watching him suffer and now it seems we've got an epidemic brewing. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Same question.  I just worry, if not treated properly, it can cause a bacterial infection.
The only thing I have ever heard of is olive oil but have no idea hiw long that takes or if it really works
