I need advice about my dogs congestive heart failure.

My dog about 15 years old, and has e. She was diagnosed about a year ago. And the vet just put her on water pills. That's all she is on still. About every two months she goes through these coughing/hacking spells. Is this normal for dogs with CHF? We have tried EVERYTHING to help, but NOTHING works.
I just want to know if she is suffering or in pain! The vet I'm going to just doesn't seem to know what she is doing. Of course nether do I so I really shouldn't be talking. I really want to take her to a different vet for a 2nd opinion but worried about the cost. The hacking spells are becoming more often and lasting longer, and becoming harder and harder to keep her from coughing (with cough syrup etc). The one she is going through right now has lasted 2 weeks. The vet gave us antibiotics and a strong cough syrup. I also upped the water pills. Its not as bad, but not completely gone. She's just doped up 24/7 now. I just feel helpless.  I don't want to see her suffer, if she is. I just lost one of my other dogs a week ago, seeing her go though this is just killing me. IS SHE IN PAIN? When she goes through these spells does that mean she cant breath? cause I can hear it in her chest. like a weez. PLEASE help. I'm just at a loss of what to do anymore.
But, when she isn't going through these spells she is as happy as can be. Running around like a puppy.

You need to take her to a different vet.   Doesn't sound like your present vet knows what to do with heart problems.   My Dalmatian was diagnosed 3 weeks ago with congestive heart failure and after treatment and drugs, he is out of the congestive heart failure stage but, of course, still has the enlarged heart.  He takes about 3 different hear medications and is tolerating them well.   You need a second opinion.

Well guys my dog is 8yrs of age. Most beutiful shepard/colly mix. Two days ago he was lively as he always is. Until he started to get very weak. We brought him to the vet who gave him blood tests and we were told he looks to fine and has no high temp infections etc. Over night he got really bad and struggled to breath.

Following morning we were told it was fluid around his heart and they will drain it etc but its not looking good. We were told the fluid was blood and it is just returning and there is no hope. We made the hardest decision ever to have him put down but I feel it was right. He suffered enough over a 24hr period. I am truely heartbroken as he was my best friend. R.I.P SAMMY

Don't know what Olive Oil would do for a cough.  Call the vet for advice.

suzaroo55-This is truly a hard decision for anyone to make. I would take him to your vet for a consultation-if he is not eating and is depressed, together you could decide on his quality of life.  Has he been treated with med's?  My 12 year old husky has been on Enalpril, Vetmedin and a diuretic for over 8 months now since being diagnosed with CHF.  These meds have allowed her to breath much easier and to live quite comfortably. I spend a good part of my day wiping up urine since the diuretics make her urinate without her even knowing she's doing it but this is a small price to pay for having her alive still. Please visit your vet and ask for assistance with this decision. Wishing you the best during this hard time.
