Is it time to say goodbye?

My dog- a lab/greyhound? mix, is 3 years old and has been very sick for the last 3-4 weeks.  He began vomiting w/ diarehea- then didn't eat.  We took him to the vet and had blood tests done.  The results were dehydration (obviously). He was given fluids.  Three days later he was back to vomiting and not eating and we were back at the vet- this time she told us it could be pancreatitis or an obstruction.  We treated for pancreatitis (fluids/steroids/antibiotic).  Again, better for three days, then back to vomiting and not eating.  Went back a few days later for more of the same.  Doctor says x-rays might show an obstruction- might not- and that would mean surgery- which we can't afford.  At this point he has lost so much weight and we are wondering if it is time to say goodbye.  Anyone else have a dog with pancreatitis?  What are the symptoms, treatment, chance of recovery?  Thanks for your help!

I had ( still have her) a dog that had pancreatitis, she had it the same time she was ill with IMHA, so I don't know what they did to help her. I will tell you that your dog needs to be on low fat food. I would get Hills/ Science Diet Light to start off, most treats have too much fat so stay away from them. I would cook up chicken breast ( it's low fat) with some rice, both are easy on the stomach. Feed as much as your dog will eat, add some banana as a treat, and maybe get some pedilite water ( no flavor) and give to your dog to help with the mineral balance.

My dog has been well for 3 years now...oh, to treat her IMHA cost me more than I want to talk about...it was right at the time for me to do it, but I can't say I would do it again. I love my dog, but these vet bills really do add up ( esp., emergency vet).

Keep us posted

I'm very sorry to hear about your dog. hopefully it is something that can be treated. however if you feel that you can not keep up with the financial side of having a chronically ill dog, who would do fine with medication, you can often sign them over to animal welfare. they will find a foster family who will be able to take care of any medical needs. it is a hard thing to do, but in my opinion a better way than putting him to sleep. hope he gets better soon.
