Unlike Kuma, I knew of my Jack's illness, but did not realize how short a life span he would have and even with a very expensive operation, it did
not mean he live much longer from liver disease lived only little over 4 years. The shock of this event still haunts to this evey day, but it's almost
like I'm keeping 10-27-2011 in the back of my mind, wondering what if
and guilt, even though many on here have given me so much comfort,
still stays with me. You did nothing wrong with your Kuma. It matters
little to know what took him after they are gone. It's coming to terms with
living without your good friend is what is going to be hard. These large
dogs die sooner than smaller dogs, but I;m sure it was his heart. It could
be numerous reasons, but for you now is get through your grief. Please
know all this is normal and it will take a while to give over your wonderful
pet. I am older guy and I think it hits me harder more now, as I understand so much life is short and everyday counts. I love my family, freinds and my pets. You found a good home here to express you feelings. Please posts some pictures of Kuma, if you don't mind. Take care Alex,

Mark

Alex...
Thanks for sharing your photos. I enjoyed looking at them.
I know that the upcoming Holidays will not be the same for you this year.
As Christmas approaches,
Kuma will be heavy on your mind, and missed even more.
I hope you will find some peace, knowing that others understand your loss.
And we will be going through the same thing.
Our dogs are our family...and we grieve for them as such.
Give your pup extra hugs...he will be happy to be Kuma's proxy....So give him one hug for Kuma...and another for himself...and tell him thank you for being there to help you heal.

Hi Alex. They are great pictures. I'm sure you must be missing your best friend and feeling dreadfully sad, but remember you gave Kuma all the attention and care he could ever have needed - and he knew love in his life, which some dogs never get the opportunity of experiencing. The days and weeks ahead may seem somewhat empty without him being there, which is how I feel now having lost my beautiful lurcher BB, but in time you will remember all the happy days Kuma shared with you. Best wishes. Tony

I am also terribly sorry about your Kuma. It's always hard to lose a loved one, a family member, but harder in a way I think, when there is no warning....they are healthy one minute and passed away the next. That is shocking and confusing, and I am very sad for you
.
Unless Kuma was genetically pre-disposed to any certain conditions, and your little pup and Kuma were closely related, then it's most likely not anything that will affect the little one. If there had been an infection, or anything that could be passed to the pup, you would almost surely have seen signs for days before.

You probably don't need to be worried about the little one. But I totally understand how you feel. I'd say, to put your mind at rest, maybe sometime you could take your pup for a thorough check-up, to see all is definitely well.
I am very sorry. Blessings to you.

Hi. I was so sad to read your post about Kuma. A friend of mine that I don't see nearly enough of had four fabulous newfoundlands. They are fantastic dogs. There are of course many reasons why Kuma may have passed away and sadly Connie is right, without having an autopsy done you may never find the answer, though given the obvious speed of how it happened and the fact there were no prior symptoms (and as newfy's are large dogs) the most likely cause is a heart attack.

If you have a photo of Kuma, I would love to see it, when you feel able to put one on here. He may have had an all-too-short life, but he was blessed with your love and kindness ... give your 3-month old extra cuddles ... and give yourself one from me. Take care. Tony

I am sorry to hear about Kuma.
You may never know the reason behind his death. The only way that would be a possibility is to have an autopsy done.
I would have to guess that given the fact that he was generally healthy, the most probable cause would be a heartattack.
Many Heart conditions will go undetected for years if the dog is not showing any other symptoms associated with the disease.
I am so sorry that Kuma died...but, he died quickly and with no suffering.
He was a lucky dog to live his life in the company of someone who loves him.
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy...
God Bless Kuma's Beautiful Spirit and Soul.
