ear infection???

I have an 8 year old Saint Bernard. He has always had bad ears with chronic yeast infectons. However for the past month he has had this horrible odor( not yeast) coming from his ear. It is only 1 ear & it obviously hurts because if I try to clean his ear he flexes up & doesn't want me to touch it. the drainage or wax has turned dark brown instead of the usual yellowish color. I would have allready taken him to the vet but he doesn't do well with vets due to pevious bad experiences. He is an indoor dog & always has been. I don't know what to treat this with.. over the counter!! Please help!! The odor almost smells like a decompsoing animal!! It is horrible & I know that He is uncomfortable. I was told by a friend to wash it out with peroxide but I am not sure that this is a good idea!1 any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

I wouldn't put anything into his ear without talking to a vet first.  If you can't get him to the vet, then maybe your vet will prescribe something based on your description, or recommend something over the counter you can use.  It doesn't hurt to give the vet a call and see what they can suggest over the phone.  Hope you get some good advice and that your pup feels better soon!

Tough luck that he's had bad vet experiences, but most dogs resist going through that door.  That ear sounds badly infected, so you have no choice, and neither does your dog.  No excuses: get him to a vet or you may well lose him leaving this problem untreated.  Is there any possibility of finding a vet to make a house call in your area?
