I'm sorry for the loss of your beloved pet. I know that is not an easy decision to make but you did the right thing for Madison.
Thanks for your concern and info. My sweet baby Madison got worse and we had to make a hard decision today. She is spending her 1st night away from her family since she was 4 weeks old. She is at her new home The Rainbow Bridge. I will miss her so much. So please if anyone else reads this and has not had their female spayed do so. I did not know of this terrible disease and hits hard and fast.
Thanks for your concern
Your vet is right. Jaybay provided you with great information. Please don't hesitate long if you plan to spay her or it may be too late. There is also a blood test the vet can do to
help determine if your dog will tolerate anesthesia. Good luck
Pyometra is an extremely dangerous and even fatal condition. Spaying is the best way to treat it because the infection is so severe that even strong antibiotics aren't always helpful. In my opinion, it would be better to spay her sooner rather later. You don't want to give the infection any more chance to weaken her system before surgery. Being a senior dog makes it even more dangerous so you need to have a very frank discussion with your vet.
For anyone else reading, pyometra is one major reason to spay your female dogs. Spaying also greatly reduces the chances of mammary cancer. If you aren't a licensed breeder, the benefits of spaying far outweigh the small cost of the surgery.
