Please help-Daisy is sick

Daisy is our beloved collie/border collie baby blue eyed girl. She is approximately 14 years old. I know what you're going to say-that's old. Yes, but she was in perfect health 3 days ago. She was running and jumping and just very happy and playing with our 2 year old rottweiler like she was the same age. All of a sudden, she wouldn't eat. She would drink, but only got up 1-2 times yesterday. Then yesterday eve, her back legs ceased to function right. She could get up on her front legs like she was going to get up, but her back legs wouldn't support her. Now, she will hardly drink, still won't eat anything including (beef broth/chicken/chicken broth). She is laying on her side and breathing hard. She has no energy at all. She can lift her head-but that's it. I have her laying on a blanket. I was talking to her and crying and she looked at me and the middle of her eyes-the black part-looked red. I am praying that the lord will take her in her sleep-as I don't have the heart to subject her to any vet testing/prodding. Is there anything I can do to make her more comfortable. She is breathing hard and does not want me to move her.

Thank you Ginger, Lucey, Thomas and Holliee,
Thank you so much for your advice and prayers. Lucey and Holliee I am truly sorry about your babies. I am tearfully writing this to tell you that Daisy passed on peacefully last night around 9 pm. Before she passed, my son and I helped her outside in the rain to relieve herself using a big bath towel to support her underneath. Within 1 1/2 hours, she was gone. Right after she passed on, we started crying and then the rain became torrential. It was as though heaven was crying with us. She was a true lady-unbelievably she wouldn't urinate on her comforter. She had a beautiful spirit. She was the last of our original pets that we had since before our children were born. All of our babies have lived to a grand age. We have lost our Rottweiler-Diogi(DeeOgee) at 14 yrs, our min pin Mickey at 13, and our min pin/pomeranian Tiny at 14. We got Miss Daisy when a rodeo performer/rancher decided to go on the road and sell his ranch. He asked us if we would like to have her-he had named her after his mother. We took her in and she was family from the first. We have a vet who makes housecalls, and other than him (seen for shots), she had never been to a vet's office. She was a true country baby. She loved swimming in the tank, and roaming the pastures. My husband says she was 17 or 18 years old, not 14 because the rancher had her for 3-4 years prior. I hope anyone who reads this will not judge us because we did not bundle her up and take her in. We (my family) feel as though this is the way she would've wanted it. I am now pretty sure that she was in Congestive Heart Failure, as our 14 year old pomeranian/min pin died 2 years ago with the same symptoms. I took Tiny to the vet, and had to give her lasix shots in the neck for weeks. I also had to bring her to and from the city vet, (which is about an hour away), which was a real hardship on Tiny, because she had never been away from me. I didn't want Daisy being poked/prodded/examined unless I felt she was not yet ready to go. I know it sounds funny, but I believe you can look in your baby's eyes, and tell if they're tired and ready to go, or if they have fight left in them to survive. I feel as though Daisy was ready to go. We put her in her big comforter, and buried her at the back of 15 acres along with her friends that she had grown up with. My husband used the front end loader/bucket on his big tractor to dig a deep hole earlier this morning before we all woke up. Later this morning,we all piled on the tractor, and put her in the front end,and we all took her back there together. We gave her a proper funeral. My hubby, the kids, and I picked some of my long-stemmed roses. We said some things over her, but we didn't say goodbye. We said see you later because as a Christian, I refuse to believe that she won't be there. God will want us happy in heaven, and I don't think I would ever be happy without our babies. She is in a very scenic spot-surrounded by a few oak trees and very quiet. In the spring, the pasture will be full of indian paint brush flowers, and bluebonnets. I walk that way sometimes just to let our other babies know they are not forgotten. Our Daisy girl had a good, long life-better than most. I just wanted to reach out to you all and see if there was something more I could do to make her more comfortable. In the end, you all restored my faith in people. Thank you for taking time out to respond to my question. There really are caring people left in this world. God bless you all and God bless all the animals.

I am very sorry to hear about the troubles that you and Daisy are experiencing right now.

As you said, 14 is certainly a senior dog, but it is possible that she still has a few years left in her.   I understand not wanting to put her through any extensive testing, but much of what the veterinarian can do is non-invasive (like xrays or ultrasound) and she probably won't feel a needle stick for bloodwork.  It is possible that she could recover from this episode, but without a veterinarian's opinion, you won't know either way.

If she does have a serious injury or illness, its really not fair to simply wait and hope for her to die in her sleep.   Your veterinarian can help relieve her pain and suffering.

I think you need to take her to the veterinarian now.   Have someone help you get her on to a blanket and lay her in the back of your car.   The veterinarian's staff can help you at the clinic if you call ahead and let them know you are coming.

So hard going through that I know. I wont put an animal through testing and that when they are sick like that. I got my pup put down as he had parvo. It was hard but it was the best thing so he didnt suffer.

The weakness in your dog and no appetite makes me think parvo. My friend had a dog that had a seizure. They think it was from eating cedar wood. They arent too sure but she is spunky, yet cant get up. She just scoots on the floor. I would guess parvo. My pup was fine, then one morning puked but seemed to be ok, then diarrhea and not eating all the next day. then barf, diarrhea not eating and barely drinking. It was 3 days of sickness and on the 3rd day we had him put down as he was trying to go hide likely to die. He could barely hold up his head and was puking blood.

All the best, let me know how it goes. Praying for you.

Your poor Daisy. I'm sorry she's unwell like this so suddenly.
Dogs often refuse to eat and sometimes drink, when they are in some kind of pain.
I don't know, obviously, what is happening with her. Only the vet could tell you, and yes, that would mean tests of one kind or another.
A painkiller, (and anti-inflammatory) like Rimadyl  is one thing you could try. But that would mean speaking to your vet. But it might be worth trying, just in case pain, for instance, from arthritis, could be behind this?
It is just possible she injured or badly strained herself while playing with your Rottie? And then the lack of food because of pain (or her refusal of food) would make the situation worse. as she would feel weaker.

My thoughts are with you and I feel for you. I do hope things work out for your Daisy. Please let us know here, if you get time at all.
