Pooping/Peeing In Cage

I have about a 1.5 year old boston terrier/pug mix. The first year I had him he was very good and was potty trained very well, never went in the house or his cage. After I finished down at school for that year I went home for the summer, and he kind of moved back and forth from my moms house to my dads house. That's when he started pooping/peeing in his cage. I'm not back up at school and I'm the only one who's watching him, because before my mom would help me when he was there. He is continueing to poop and pee in his cage, he does not have a problem holding it, because If I let him sleep with me he will hold it for as long as he needs to over night. Never ever poops/pees in the house.

I usually don't have him in his cage for more than 4 hours at a time. I have tried giving him treats when he goes outside, walking him around till he goes to the bathroom (sometimes he ends up going, sometimes he doesnt). Tried removing blankets/towells from his cage, tried putting more in their to make it more comfortable. I yell and smack him and put his nose in it when he goes in his cage, never can catch him in the act because he is only in there when im gone usually. I have began to make him sleep in his cage, because he never slept in his cage before, but I thought maybe if he gets use to sleeping in there he wont poop and pee where he sleeps, but he continues to do it. He usually smells bad all the time because I can only give him a bath so many times...hes sitting and sleeping in his pee because its almost everytime he is in there, he atleast pees on himself or in his cage.

An example of what happened today, and this has happened more than once.
   - I made him sleep in his cage, put him in there around 2am, woke up around 11am. Fed him, and took him outside to go to the bathroom. He went pee right away, and than I walked around and tried waiting for him to go poop outside but he ended up not going, so I thought he didn't have to go. I come back inside and put him in his cage because I was going to go get some food to eat. I leave and was maybe gone for 20-30minutes, and come back to poop in his cage, he has done this multiple times when I have left for short periods of time and taken him out right before I left.

Please help, can't have this keep happening

Good God, seriously? You "yell and smack him and put his nose in it"??

This is a young dog still. He needs consistency and it doens't sound like you provide it. You have a LOT to learn about training - positive reinforcement, verbal correction / redirection, etc.

Get some professional help with training and stop hitting your dog.

This is a kennel-training incident gone horribly bad!  Some facts about dogs: discipline more than five minutes after a behavior does no good, as the dog will not connect it anymore with his actions, and it turns into actual abuse.  The peeing and pooping in his kennel is behavioral.  He is upset with being in his kennel, and show it by doing this.  Please Google Kennel Training, and Dog training.  This will give you all the info you need. - Blu
