Spaying my dog

My dog already had her period.  Is it safe now to get her spayed?

What I really mean by "heat cycle" is the 3 weeks (approx. 21 days) of her being on heat, counting 3 weeks on from the time you first noticed any blood spots.
There's always bound to be a day or so out, because sometimes, especially with dogs who are outside a lot, or who have dark coloured bedding, the bleeding can be missed at first....and some young females have irregular cycles -for instance sometimes they can be on heat less than 3 weeks. But the usual with any female is 21 days

How long ago did she go out of heat?  The normal practice is to wait until about 2 to 3 months has passed since her heat cycle and at that point it is safe to spay.

The reason vets like to wait is because it takes between 60 and 90 days for the dog's body to return to normal after a heat cycle.  While she is in season, the blood vessels in and around the uterus are engorged with blood.  While she CAN be spayed during this time, it carries a higher risk of hemorrhaging during the surgery, so as long as it's not a case of having to spay her while she is pregnant to prevent her from having an unwanted litter, most vets prefer to wait until the risky period has passed.  If they DO spay during a heat cycle of while a female is pregnant, the surgery costs quite a bit more due to the increased risk.

To answer your original question again, however, as long as 60 to 90 days has passed since she was in season, it is safe to spay her now.

Yes you can get her spayed. The best time to do this, according to my vet, is in between "heat" cycles. A dog usually comes into heat every 6 months, so it might be the best plan to work out when her last heat ended, and when approximately the next one would start, and schedule her surgery for about halfway between.
Very young dogs can sometimes be slightly irregular at first, but if you went for about 2-3 months after her last heat ended that should be ok.
I recommend you have a word with your vet, and see what they say.
