Suddenly sick 5 weeks old Chihuahua

Yesterday my 5 week old Chihuahua puppy was lively, very active and playful, eating fine with proper bowel movements.  This morning she threw up a few times and now has diarrhea and has slept all day very  lethargic, except to get up and pee and poop on her  pad or go get some water.  Since it came on  so  suddenly I am under the assumption she ate something she shouldn't have.  She  has not vomited since this morning.  Just lethargic and diarrhea.  I will be trying the chicken and rice diet as of tomorrow hoping this will do the trick.  Should I be worried about  Hypoglycemia? And how long should it take her to come around? Should I be worried?

hon... chihuahuas are known for diabetis.... when she starts to act funny and lethargic... take a tiny drop of karo syrup on your finger and let her lick it off... if she begins to act normal.. then she could very well be hypoglycemic hon... this is something the vet needs to look at.. i breed chihuahuas.. and have had this trouble with the very tiny chi's.. and yes.. at 5 weeks old.. the pup should have still been with its mama!!!!!  too early for the lil one to be away from its mother... normally on chi's depending on their size... its okay to leave them up to 8 weeks with their moms.   hope all is better iwth the lil one

Agree with Karla!!!!  That puppy is just too young to be away from it's mother.
And, chicken and rice may be a bit too much for such a young puppy.
You can get some canned goat's milk and some regular baby rice cereal (in the box) and mix up a gruel for the puppy.
Definitely would have a Vet check it out.
Hope it improves.

Glad to hear she's better......Keep a close eye on her though.... Any breeder that let her go at 5wks. is your first red flag!  Good luck to you both and let us know how she's doing......Take care, Karla

Well we believe she either had a drastic reaction to a food brand change or got ahold of something that made her sick.  I made her the chicken and rice, she ate some this morning, she's bouncing around a bit back to being a little playful.  But she is still a little on the out of it side but she is definately doing better.  I even brought her a little more to eat a bit ago and she made no resistance and she let out a little more solid BM.

I am making arrangements to take her in anyway for her first exam and shots.  I will discuss it with the vet.  Thank you very much for the quick replies/

Hello & welcome...Yes, Hypoglycemia is a problem, but dehydration alone, can be fatal.....I don't know if you have the litter of pups, but a 5wk. old should still be with it's mother for a number of reasons....

You need to get your puppy to a Vet.....Parvo would be my concern, which the symptoms you describe, fit....It may be just starting & once it starts, it goes downhill, quickly....

Please, seek treatment ASAP.....Good luck & keep us posted....Karla
