What's going on?????

Hey, Please help me......I get a call from my petsitter today on Easter Sunday that my little boy chihuahua didn't eat his breakfast this morning, and when he went outside to go for his walk and to potty, he began eating A LOT of grass.  I have another little chi and he a couple of months ago had a gastro problem and my vet placed him on Metoclopromide.  Is this for upset stomachs?  Can I give him one of these pills.  He can't seem to get comfortable when he lies down.  His diet is a raw food diet mixed in with a little pumpkin to help increase his fiber intake to help him when he goes to the bathroom.  He always seems to strain a lot to dispel his waste........please help me......

AWW poor thing! First of all what a good daddy you are :)  Pepcid AC is a good choice I use that for my boy too. Prilosec OTC is the next one I go for. Cooked chicken is ok I'd recommend buying ground chicken and boil it in water for about 20 mins then drain and mix with rice. You can always put it in a food processor or blender to make mush for him. In fact the mush can be rolled into small meatballs and put in the freezer then given as a treat that he has to lick for a long time or pu into a small kong. Good mental stimulation when he has to be alone :)  My only suggestion  is if he starts to vomit at all take away all food and let his tummy calm down just offer  small amounts of water. It's also best to offer small amounts first. If he does ok then try some more. Doggies don't know any better so they just gulp away sometimes so you have to slow them down when their systems go out of whack. I would probably see your vet if he's still not himself tomorrow just to make sure there are no issues from the raw diet. Let us know how he does. Pumpkin is great for dogs just don't over do it ;)  Good luck!

I cooked chicken tonight and threw in some white rice for their dinner tonight.  Going to go bland as possible for a couple of days.  Also heard that Pepcid AC ( not the Pepcid Complete ) can be used for upset stomachs and dosed according to their weight.  The only reason that I placed him on this raw diet food was this:  I lost my little girl chihuahua from a heart murmur, and rescued another little one.  A boy this time 9 years olds.  Took him to my vet to have him checked out internally-----everything's fine, but my vet did have to pull all of his teeth.  So now I have a sweet toothless wonder who's tongue hangs out the side of his mouth.  Well I couldn't feed him hard dry food so I began introducing them to this raw diet.  I am open to any suggestion however if you think that this raw thing might not be the way to go........Again, thanks for responding............

In Him,
Rick

Reglan is good for some dogs however I myself have a dog with major digestive and intestinal issues and reglan makes him puke so it could be that but contrary to some opinions raw diets can cause e coli, salmonella, etc. infections. Also dogs eating a raw diet can shed these bacteria in their scales which can affect humans. As a vet tech whenever a dog on raw diet comes in we ALWAYS suit up with protection. When I was pregnant my ob-gyn advised me to steer clear of raw diet dogs because humans with weakened immune systems like pregnant women, children or anyone with autoimmune issues can easily contract harmful bacteria from their shedding. Be careful! I always say cavemen ate raw foods too at one time but only lived till 18 or 20, humans evolved and so do animals so going backwards isn't always right. Medical advances came about for a reason. Cooking foods did too!

Yes, it sounds like he's nauseated, and the reglan (metoclopromadine) should help him for a day or so.  You don't want to use it long-term without a vet's supervision as it was only approved for short-term use in both animals and humans.  It may be that a raw diet isn't the best thing for thing for him.  If he still isn't better in a day or so, or becomes noticeably worse, you'll need to have you vet take a look at him.
