golden retriever pup with long lasting diahreah

My 6 1/2 month golden has had on and off diahreah for 3+months.  She's been on and off of flagyl with semi-sucessful results) but whenever she's off again, the loose poops start right back up again.  When formed, her poops can be greyish-yellowish in color and at times, can look like they're in a balloon of slime.  When medium-bad diahreah, it has the consistency of soft serve ice cream and is very grainy (yellow beady), when really bad it's almost like a soup.  We've had poop samples done, blood work for pancreas/kidney/liver... the most recent blood test came back saying she was fine with her pancreatic digestive enzymes (tripsinogin), fine with B12, but her folate level was high.  So today, she started on Tylan powder, 1/8tsp, every 12 hours.  Advice?  could this be the problem or would you keep looking?!?  Oh yes, I've been feeding her rice and ground beef.

Our dog had the same thing.  It turned out to be a wheat allergy.  It's a possiblity you could look into.    Good luck!

I just noticed that she started Tylan today. Tylan is an antibiotic. I appologize for missing it when I first read your post. Your Vet seems to be thinking in the right direction.

I think you should see an improvement after a day or two.

Good Luck and i hope all turns out well.

Your poor dog has Chronic Diarrhea and there are many causes. Because of this the cause has to be found soon as it will get worse and the dog can become toxic.

I am going to assume that your Vet checked for worms, so we will rule that out. The liver and pancreas tests were normal so we will rule that out also. The only other things I can think of is Leaky Gut Syndrome which is allergies to certain foods or the diet itself.

You stated that you are feeding her ground beef and rice which is not bad for this conditon as long as the beef is boiled. You want the least amount of fat as possible right now. I would switch to boiled chicken with rice if the diarrhea is that bad and see if there is an improvement.

Has your vet prescribed any type of antibiotics? Sometimes they will when the diarrhrea is chronic. There is a condition called SIBO that causes too much bacteria to grow in the small intestine (I think) that will respond to antibiotics. That is why I am asking. I have had a lot of experience with German Shepherds and it has been known to happen with them but I have seen it with the Retriever as well. The folate will be high with this condition but also with diet as well.

I hope this helps and I wish you well.
