Let me edit my ther post. She had a BM 2 days ago but she typically goes morning afternoon & night. I am going to try the pumpkin trick tonight but any insight to this?
Maybe you can all help me as well, I posted earlier today but haven't recieved responses yet. My chorky (11 mos) is going into heat I think she is quite swollen and her sister from the same litter just had her first heat. Firstly, does this impede eating and defecating habits? she is increasingly picky about eating & has not had a regular BM in over a week.
Second question based on this post...In a neighborhood heavily populated with dogs how can I effectively keep the boys away from her? She is typically not walked on a leash but since her mannerisms have changed she's always leashed. When I take her into a gated area in my complex I allow her to walk freely because I'm concerned the leash is preventing her from going to the bathroom. She's been horrible with her commands to return to me at this time, so I cannot remove her leash any more because I don't want her attracting any males.
Please help!
You're very welcome! Do you have pics of her you can post? I LOVE pics of puppies! :)

Hi thankyou both for info
To add to what Tony has already said, the heat cycle lasts for 21 days, but sometimes it even last a few days longer. DO NOT ALLOW HER TO COME INTO CONTACT WITH ANY MALE DOGS until the swelling in her vulva is COMPLETELY GONE. The time in her heat cycle when you see the little blood droplets around the floor and places she has sat or laid down is not her fertile time. After the blood droplets are no longer visible, THAT'S the time to worry about her getting caught by the males. From then until the end of her heat cycle she will accept a male and it's even possible that she could accept them during the blood droplet stage, but normally, it's after that stage stops that the fertile stage starts.
After the swelling is completely gone, wait about 60 days and then make an appointment for her to be spayed so you don't have to worry about this every time she comes into heat, which will be twice a year. You'll be doing her AND you a HUGE favor by having her spayed because not only will you not have to worry about unplanned puppies, you will eliminate her chances of developing pyometra, a life-threatening infection of the uterus that is common in unspayed females, and you will also drastically be lowering her chances of developing cancerous mammary tumors as she gets older.

Yes, it's quite normal for female dogs to come into their first season anywhere between 6 and 12 months. It goes without saying, you should keep a close eye on her during this time - as male dogs can smell a b***h on heat for up to 3 miles away. Tony
