Actually, sadly, there is a good chance your Golden had hemangiosarcoma. Sadly Golden Retrivers are predisposed to it. It usually develops during mid to later part of their lifespan. Unfortunately, it is terminal. I lost 2 to it. The first was 18 years old. The 2nd only 7.
Hello:
I was searching through the internet for answers to why my golden retriever of 8 1/2 years acquired tumors and passed away. As a puppy of 6 months old, we left him at home, in a room with a wide view of the outside world on three sides, with care takers attending him three times a day for about 45 minutes each while we were on vacation. I, presume, out of loneliness and fear he burrowed through the wall and got into the habit of eating gypsum, which I couldn't predict. I reason that it may have damaged his rapidly growing cells and ended up with a bone tumor and, likely, another one at heart bringing his demise though he was taken care of well diet wise and exercised for about 3 miles a day all through his life. I would be interested to know if your dog had any cancers in her life.
Regards.
How long ago did it happen, and how much did they actually consume? Chances are good that it will pass through with no problems. Keep an eye on them until they poop it out. If you see any evidence of lack of apetite, vomiting, NOT pooping, or bloated abdomen then they'll need emergency treatment. This would be a good time to call your vet for advice and also ask about who to call for off-hours emergencies and keep the number handy.
Were the pups digging a hole in a wall or did they get into a pile of new or old drywall material? The reason I ask is because dogs have some great noses that they can scent rodents or toads or lizards or other "fun" critters that can get into the walls of our homes. Sometimes they get so driven to track down things in the walls that they'll literally eat their way through to get at them. I had a dog who did the same thing when she was about 6 months old. She had no problems, but we had a good 12-inch diameter hole to repair when she was finished. I still don't know exactly what she was after, which is probably just as well!
