I think you have given me the courage to try it........I'll obviously wait until dh gets home.
I kept airhorns in every room in the house, just in case I had to grab one in an instant. You don't want to be running around looking for it if there is a fight.
Its sooooo loud, it scared the bejesus out of ALL the dogs. And out of me. It was pretty funny, the way they all scattered like the wind, and wouldn't come out of cowering for about an hour.
I kept the airhorns around for a long time after that. The dogs would all eye them suspiciously whenever they saw them. But I never had to use them again.
I did go out and buy an airhorn! But I have been scared to see them together again. There fight was so brutal, they both had to stay at the hospital for a couple of days, with stiches & drains, etc. They were fighting to kill, the only reason I was able to break them up was because they were getting exhausted. So I wonder if the airhorn would even do anything. I would proabably have to keep a close eye on them and catch it right when the behavior starts. Hopefully one day soon I can get the courage up and see what happens. I can't believe I have had them seperated for so long, which probably makes things worse. My husband wants to surrender him to the rescue, he doesn't think it will ever work. That makes me sad thinking about it. I just wish I had more time to do more in depth training. When this all started, I was 6 months pregnant and now I have newborn. So my time unfortunately is limited.
One time was all it took. George was never aggressive again.
He died from intussception, which was a complication from bowel surgery long ago, when he ate part of a bath towel. Which is why I so strongly encourage you to never leave anything dangerous your dog could eat on the floor.
He ate the bath towel as a 6 month old puppy. Had 4 feet of intestines removed ($3000). He had life long bowel problems after that until his final illness and death.
I will share what we did with our George (long since gone on to doggie heaven)
He became EXTREMELY and unpredictably aggressive towards our other dogs, out of the blue. He'd be sleeping, and suddenly leap up and there would be a 4 way dog fight between dobermans, german shepherds, and the dane. Horrible, horrible, horrible. We were considering euthanizing George. The potential for real damage was certainly there. The vet strongly recommended putting him down, he was that aggressive towards our other dogs.
I got an airhorn. $10. Actually, several of them. I waited. One day, George was sleeping (apparently). He leapt up out of nowhere and attacked the other dogs. I grabbed the air horn and BLASTED AWAY.
All the dogs instantly scattered to the far corners of the house, where they remained, quaking.
There wa never, ever, another dog fight in the Peek household.
True story.
Not towards me. Just other dogs......I thought he was showing aggression towards my daughter, but he was just trying to sniff her crotch! He is gross! I guess that's what dogs do! But, no agression towards us humans, just dogs, which isn't fun....
I think its some form of Prozac, but marketed for dogs. I'm not entirely sure.
Is your dog aggressive?
