Sinus Cyst

Hello. This is my first post, but I am in need of some help. I have had severe pain in my eyes, around my eyes in in my sinuses and face for the past 8 months. It has gotten way worse the past 3 months. The pain and pressure has now spread more into my eyes, it hurts to look side to side even. Also spread into my teeth and causes serious pain in my upper right molars. I went to ENT and got a ct scan and he said there was a cyst in my right sinus cavity. My doctor said they are normally asymptomatic (the cysts), but obviously i have some serious symptoms. I have been taking pain medication (tylenol, excedrin) constantly for the last few weeks because the pain is so bad. My doctor prescribed me antibiotics, however this will be my third round of antibiotics because of previous sinus infection diagnoses. I am not sure if the cyst would be causing all this eye pressure and sinus pressure on both sides or if there is another explanation like a sinus infection that possibly needed stronger antibiotics? Please let me know if you have any help, I am desperate. Thanks so much

Thank you very much for your response. Yes, he said there was no evidence of any infection. However I had over 20 sinus infections as a kid and am most likely resistant to amox which i was given. He seems to want to prescribe me Ceftin and bring me back in for allergy testing. Not sure if allergy testing is worth the money, since I am probably allergic to a lot of things. I am already on a 24 hour prescription antihistamine. Any ideas?

Were there evidence of an infection on the CT, other antibiotics might be indicated.  Even so, there is no place for guessing beyond the 2nd round of antibiotics.  If there is indeed an infection and it hasn't responded after that, a culture is needed.

But again, there was no report (that you gave) of any evidence of infection on the scan.  I agree with the ENT who advised you before; cysts are not typically associated with any symtpoms at all -- they are considered incidental findings on sinus CT scans.  Now, exceptions might be when the cyst appears to be exerting pressure on the walls of the sinus or obstructing the drainage pathways.  In these cases, endoscopic decompression could be considered.  Otherwise, the search must continue for the true source of your pain.
