BULIMIA IN OLDER WOMEN

I have been actively bulimic for many years (I am 62) and I don't want to die like this.  I am 5'1" and weigh 115#.  I have no idea where turn.  I don't want my husband and my children, who are adults with children of their own, knowing because I am so ashamed.  I have had eating disorders since I was a young child -- I remember hiding food at the age of 8 or 9.  As a pre-teen I had gained a lot of weight and was put on dexadrine.  Not only did I lose weight my grades were straight A's.  When the doctor stopped prescribing I started slipping on grades and of course the weight came back on.  Please help!!!

Sweetie-you need to call your doctor ASAP OR insurance company and get to treatment center for eating disorders.  You need 're-define' your life and do NOT want ED to control your life when you can take back the control and have a happy healthy future....  DO THIS FOR YOU-ther is nothing to be ashamed of since you are reaching for help (and we ALL need support now and then). I am proud of you that you are taking the first step towards recovery. Good Luck and God Bless !

Hi There,

The fact of the matter is that eating disorders are very common in older women and I think that the reason that it is not a well known fact is simply because as older women this is something that we hide pretty well.  I am 38 "Soon to be 39" and I also have an eating disorder.  I flip flop between bulimia and just not eating at all.  I am 5'0" and I weigh about 113.  I have a medium frame and I work out like a demon.  I both love and hate food.  I know that eating disorders is being more and more recognized as not just being an issue for teens and young women as I have read more and more about it and my therapist says it is so very common in the older population as well.  The only thing I can tell you is that your not alone and please seek some help.  Your therapist can keep the fact that your seeking help for that issue very private.  I am in help right now for several things but the eating disorder is certainly 1 of them.

Hugs And Blessings,

Cindy
