Heart Rate Extremely High During Competiton

I am a 41 year old  male 5'11" 216 lbs and I run and do triathlons. I experience extremely high heart rates during my running portions. My resting heart rate is around 55 to 60. While running a 5 or 10k I struggle to keep my heart rate under 175. I experience times where my heart rate monitor is max'd out at 240. I take a couple of deep breaths and it flashes back to 170. When I ride my stationary bike and I train. I struggle to get my HR up to 150. I try to keep in my aerobic zone but can not when I am running. Am I pushing my luck. I feel extremely healthy and strong. Do I need to take some special kind of physical.

I agree with ryn. I would look into having a stress test maybe and ultrasound too.

Good luck

Very intensely trained athletes are often acceptions to the rule when it comes to HRM as they can exceed the max rate assessed by the HRM math equation.  However, you should definitely monitor your HR closely.  I would get a thorough health evaluation from a refutable doctor to determine whether your heart is healthy enough to endure high HR.  220 - AGE = HRM
