They have a great 5 K training program called couch to 5K.
I used this years ago to prepare for my first 5K and it was great.
I think it is a 9 week training program it is 30 minutes 3 times a week, starting with mostly walking and adding running.
well you cant be too old since your dad is only 56...(years since outa high school and running)...but even after a week off you still have to warm up. Training for a 5k or even a 10k can be easier than you think if you are in fairly good health. Walking is a great way to start w/ moderate jogs or even sprints in between. I use a track at an area school to time my 1/4 miles and such. Once i know my speed walking, jogging, and running then i can apply out on a trail. always stretch and take a day off. I found it good when i alternate days when i jog and days when i run. sometimes i jog all week and run on saturdays. good luck and you might just be ready for it if you get into practice now.
is the run for a cause??? I would contact them if it is and they can set you up w/ some pointers or even other runners that may want to run w/ you. Look on line, runnersworld.com is awesome w/ advice for marathons. Maybe even subscribe to the mag ( I am not working for the mag, I am a runner ). Good luck!!
The race is a Father's Day race that my 56yr old dad has run for the past 5yrs or so, I keep telling him I want to run it with him. This year I was planning on surprising him (that's why I came here for advice and not him. I wanted to keep it a secret!) until I found out yesterday that it is a 10K and not a 5! I am soooo not ready to run 6 miles yet...maybe next year! Thanks for all the advice!
Sounds like you're on the right track. Trying to build on your time rather than miles is a good way to train!
Good luck with the race!
