This is exactly what my symptoms are. For me, this injury resulted from lifting my maximum weight on the bench press 2 summers ago. Since then I have stopped all heavy weights on the bench and even took more than six months off for healing. When I saw my physician he assured me that it was most likely a muscle strain and said that it would resolve on its own provided I took it easy. Just to be sure he sent me for an ultrasound of my heart, x-rays, stress test, and EEG+EKG, all of which did not reveal anything out of the ordinary. However, almost two years later the pain still exists, albeit to a lesser degree (I think). Is there a doctor reading this that has any idea what this could be?? I'm going to see another doctor, but for the time being it is very discouraging because I cannot work out to stay fit.
FYI: Male, 27 y.o.a.
Smoker (10 years as well)
pain for two years around sternum, costocondritis maybe?
worsened when shoulders are put in (just as with Jay C)
tightening feeling in chest when neck is extended backwards fully
worsened pain if I were to perform a wide-grip, overhand pull up
(which I wouldn't even attempt because it would hurt quite a bit)
Yes it happened to me also in year 1998, while doing a benchpress. It's very painful around sternum area. I'm not even sure which part that was actually injured. and it often popped in the morning. Also often popped after sitting long hours in the office. You could literally hear the chest popped. It's very annoying. Since it's already a year 2008 and I still couldn't do much benchpress as I used to be. I could only do half the weights for benchpress. Any advice on how to solve this problem completely? I have once stopped working out completely for a whole full month. But the pain and popping came back.
