Daughter is in pain with big toe problem

Hi People,

Both my daughter and I go to Jazzercise three times a week. after about a month she start complaining about  a sore big toe, I felt the top of her trainers to feel her big toe right at the top, so I think its been banging against the top. I bought her new trainers after a argument I may add, she usually buys her own I give her the money.Alas Its still sore, When she presses down on the nail it hurts like hell. I took her to a foot doc (sorry can't spell the proper name) and they said that she had a bone spur and they have to remove her big toe nail. She can't stand anything on it like a sock or sometimes shoes and trainer. Question is can it be a bone spur? And if not what is causing it. And does anybody know what it is.

Hi, a bone spur can only be visualized by doing x-ray. If this is not a bone spur than the other possibility could be paronychia which is an infection that develops along the edge of the fingernail or toenail. The paronychia is first tried to control with the help of antibiotics if there is infection along with inflammation. Nail removal can help in such cases. If the podiatrist recommended nail removal then there is nothing to worry about as this is a simple procedure if done carefully with local anaesthetics and the nail will grow back quickly. The point to note here is that nail removal will not help in case of bony spur. Regards.

The foot doc didn't take an x ray she had a quick look at my daughter toe and decided to take the nail off all together.
She should have got it done on Friday but I cancelled the appointment. I don't see either how removing the nail would make a blind bit of difference either.

Did the Podiatrist take an X ray? an X ray  will show a bone spur removing the nail in my opinion won't fix the spur did the doctor say he will give her a cortisone shot?
