Initial weight loss has stopped

Hello to all.

I bought myself a mountain bike about eight weeks ago and rode along a disused canal track (almost) every day starting at two miles and building up to seven. I started at 14 stone 4 pounds and within four weeks had lost eight pounds to go to 13 stone 10 pounds.

My problem is that despite continuing my routine virtually every day I have not lost an ounce in the last four weeks. I have not eaten a single cake, biscuit, chocolate, or sweet during the eight week period and am very despondent that my efforts are now in vain.

I can’t claim to be eating a completely healthy diet but I am eating the same food and the same amount of food that I did in the first (successful) four weeks. I believe that I eat reasonably sensibly with fairly small portions. I am tea total and avoid fry ups and high fat foods completely. I use a low fat margarine and fully skimmed milk.

Can anybody tell me why I have been unable to lose a single ounce in four weeks of regular exercise after my very successful start?

Hi,

I assume your weight loss has ceased because you have reached a balance between calorie intake and output.
To adjust this - rather than eating less, you should eat more of particular food groups (fruit and veg) and alternate the amounts of carbs/proteins in your diet.
My mum has used a very successful diet for many years where each day you choose whether you want to eat mostly protein or carbs (and we're obviously talking lean proteins and whole grain carbs/cooked without lashings of oil etc) however of both days you MUST eat from all the foodgroups. (we're not talking crappy atkins stuff here)
Other methods i have read that seem succesful are eating several smaller meals rather than three big ones - as this helps keep the metabolism ticking over.
If any of this seems interesting to you/stuff you haven't heard before then give us a shout and i will try to explain more.

It's called plateauing. You have to change up your routine, you can't do the same thing everyday. You also need to change up your foods.

Hello!

I can understand your predicament but losing weight is as simple as controlling your input and output.

You would need to calculate your BMI and follow up with a dietician to understand about your diet and the amount of calories you are presently taking and regulate accordingly.

Regular cardio of some sorts, be it cycling, hiking, running, jogging, skipping or any other activity for 30-45 minutes with a calorie loss of 500-800 calories per day will make you lose weight ultimately.

Take care!

Many thanks for the replies.
I fully intend to change my diet starting this coming weekend.
I guess is was very naive of me to think that all I had to do was go for a bike ride every day to lose weight continuously.

I'm now on whole wheat pasta, brown rice, fruit, salads, fruit and fibre cereal, and lots of veg.

I am losing weight again, thanks for all the help.

Hi,

Glad to hear you are doing well - hope you include some yummy lean protein in all that fibre rich food you are now eating coz you will need it to build muscle from all that bike riding!
Also - i think it's worth noting that muscle weighs more than fat does, so remember to check your measurements as well as the scales to see the true results of your hard work!

Kind regards
