In the last 3 or 4 years I started trying out different forms of exercise. Running seemed to be the most effective, however I've developed some problems with my knees and right foot. I've also tried yoga (hatha, bikram), pilates, various types of bootcamp and recently the bar method - all of which I enjoy. If there's weightloss, I can usually see it in my face and upper body, however my problem areas are my abdomen, obliques and thighs. With most exercise regimens I've tried, I've noticed that I don't make much progress in my problem areas. In fact, my pants fit tighter - especially around the thighs, probably due to muscle gain. It's infuriating and discouraging to say the least.
I'm 5'8 and about 150-155 lbs. - I'd like to get down to 140-145, and I mostly want to target my waist, obliques and thighs. What are some effective, low impact exercises I can do that won't result in gaining muscle weight? Are there certain foods I should/shouldn't eat? Thanks!
