Low heart rate and high blood pressure

I have very low heart rate (resting at about 45) and a blood pressure which is about 150/90. I am a 53 year old woman who recently over the past year has improved my fitness markedly. I attend the gym for a hard workout about 4-5 times a week.

I am worried that during gym session, my HR can peak at 189. I do not fgeel any particular effects other than what would be expected from a tough work out. Should I be worried?

As for the high blood pressure, I would suggest consulting your primary care physician for appropriate medications that would help lower the blood pressure without reducing the heart rate and appropriate lifestyle changes.

Hi there!

The electronic devices used at the gym to measure the peak heart rate may not be very accurate. If you have always maintained a basal heart rate of 45/min without any symptoms and have had this evaluated by a doctor to be considered fine, it should not be anything to worry about. I would suggest taking a manual reading of the pulse rate during the exercise sessions and repeating this after 5 minutes of stopping the exercise. If the recovery is good, this should not be anything to worry about; though if the pulse rate crosses 180/min during exercise, on manual reading; you may consider an evaluation by a cardiologist to look for secondary causes.
Hope this helps.

Take care!
