Left calf pain

For the past three months I have been experiencing a progressively more frequent pain/cramp in my left calf. this normally occurs at its most severist first thing in the morning and when I walk down stairs. At the same time the index fingure on my left hand has begun to also ache, especially first thing in the morning. Could this all be down to calcium deficiency or is it the beginning of arthritis. I am only 42 years old. I exercise regulary, normally swimming and watch what I eat. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

That is right DrNoopurMD it is most likely an imbalance of Potassium to Sodium. These minerals go together but the ration should be 6:1 (6 part potassium) yet look at any package of any food and there is a ton of sodium (salt) in it. It is incredibly hard to avoid sodium altogether as it is even already in vegetables like carrots. What you can do is increase potassium by eating yams, potatoes, bananas, cantaloupe, papaya, guava, and the best yet, salt substitute as it is potassium based.

The best way to flush sodium out of the body is drink lots of water and/or use diaretics.

Medications, alcohol, and coffee all deplete the body of potassium so be contious of what you put in your body.

Hi,

The calf pain could also be due to deficiency of electrolytes like potassium. Please maintain your fluid intake during the day. Fruit juices are rich in potassium.
Does the finger hurt in the joints? Please elaborate.

Hi bluemood007, how are you? Hope you are feeling better now? Soreness and cramps in muscle is common after a hectic day due to excessive strain. Calcium deficiency is also known to cause it. Can you give some more details of you left index finger pain? You can take calcium supplements daily and do regular massage, hot fomentation/steam bath at night. Drink lot of water as dehydration can also cause the cramps. Continue exercises, stretches and swimming. It is better to consult an orthopedic doctor and get evaluated.
