Opposite problem - can't gain weight

I've been have issues with unintention weight loss that I can't seem to stop.  I'm 5'2", petite but only 85Ibs at 22 years old.  I was 95Ibs at 17 years, then dropped to 90Ib once I started working at a pet store (probably all the 40 pound dog food bags I was moving around) and stayed that weight until a couple months ago.  Now, it doesn't matter if I gorge on junk food for days (large blizzards, huge subway sandwichs and suppers) or eat lots of fruit and veggies I keep dropping weight.

I have had my thyroid checked (due to a 1cm nodule which is bengin) and the hormones are within normal range.  I do have asthma which has been horrible this winter (still bad here in Calgary because we have been getting snow storms up til last week), so exercising hasn't really been an option except walking which I have been doing.

I do have jaw issues that make it uncomfortable to eat and I'm getting jaw surgery next year to hopefully help with that, hence why I need to gain some weight .... I'll be on liquid diet for 3 weeks and soft food diet for 8 weeks.

Is there anything I can do to stop this weight loss?  I'm already tiny enough!

Hi,

It's not fun being at either end of the scale so i totally sympathise with yur situation.

To add to Tammy's list of food recommendations i would say eat nuts and seeds - brilliant little beggars they are high in good fats, vitamins, minerals and calories. If your jaw causes a problem with crunchy food then consider blending/grinding these down - ground almonds for example will make beautiful cakes. :)

Another point is to be consistent with eating - the same as if you were dieting to lose weight - it does not go on or come off overnight, therefore if you binge eat every weekend but eat sparsely for the other five days you will still probably not gain weight (or so i found out the hard way!)

I am currently speaking to a nutritionalist and would suggest that this might help you too, your local GP should be able to reccommend a nutritionalist or other health supplements that might help.

I don't know if they sell cans of 'Nurishment' or boxes of powdered 'Complan' in Calgary but if they do you might also want to give them a try. Both are full of vitamins and added calories, Complan is designed with underweight/recovering individuals in mind - the powder is great as it can be added to any food you like and doesn't impair the flavour. (well it makes skimmed milk a little chalky imo but doesn't have a flavour of its own)

Hope this helps and wish you luck.

Hello!

If this is the problem then concentrate on liquids and semisolids.

You can have soy milk regularly and also consider milk shakes or drinking supplements which contain protein.

Consider eating 3-4 protein biscuits regularly during your breaks, this will help.

Sit with a nutritionist and customize a diet chart for yourself.

Take care!

Thanks for the comments ... I do eat a lot of protein but I have cut back the amount of meat in the last 3-4 years because it was "healthier".  I'm playing with dairy because it seems to make my asthma worse and give me gas.  I've switched to soy milk but it is lower in fat than cow's milk but yogurt and cheese do bug me a bit too so I've cut back on them but haven't really found a substitue yet.

Typical day - breakfast: always large bowl of cereal and apple juice (not a morning person); lunch - normally ham or tuna sandwich with fruit (2 servings), granola bar or a salad with chicken, cheese and french dressing; supper - big piece of meat (chicken, ground beef or something like that),sweet potatoes or brown rice and veggies.  I will also snack a couple times on fruit or crackers or a bowl of cereal.

Unforunately nuts are out because I have braces right now.  I have tried putting more sauces and things that are not low fat versions (mom is trying to lose weight right now) but not helping.  The other thing I know affects it is when I'm working, we only get a 30 minute lunch break during the 8 hour shift so I don't have time to snack regularly like I would normally.  I also have stupid elastics on the braces that are suppose to be in a minimum of 22 hours a day (take out for eating and brushing) and that also stops my snacking too.

I defintely will look into the supplements and see if they help.  Thanks for all the suggestions.

Hello!

At a height of 5'2" and a weight of 85 pounds you have a BMI of 15.5. You are underweight and your weight is not acceptable as you should gain atleast to 100 pounds to achieve a normal BMI.

I would suggest you to eat lots of protein in your diet along with salads and carbohydrate you are presently consuming. Eggs, milk, meat should be part of your breakfast and lunch regularly. You can also have beans, legumes, cheese and sprouts which contain proteins.

Start exercises and do some weights to put on weight as in gaining muscle.

Take care!
