Unable to lose weight

I cannot lose weight.  I am 46 , 5' 5" and I've weighed between 114 lbs and 125 lbs all of my life, about 13 months ago I noticed I began to gain weight.  I am now a whopping 142 lbs.  I had my thyroid checked 8 months ago and it was functioning low.  The synthroid did not help the weight issue at all as a matter of fact when I started the synthroid I weighed about 130 lbs.  I had the follow up tests done and was told it is fine.  I started on a stringent diet of Slim Fast for every meal 5 months ago, yes I eat every now and again to keep from starving to death but on the whole its SF 3 x a day.  I have been working out (elliptical) 40 minutes a day M-F for about a month.  I am still gaining weight.  Help, my doctor does not seem to overly concerned about this, as a matter of fact when I mentioned the fact that I was still gaining weight and at this rate I am going to be the heaviest person to ever starve to death she showed me the Ht Wt chart and said I was still within my limits.  I don't care about the limits!  It just seems that she is ignoring the fact that I am gaining at an alarming rate and unable not matter what to lose any weight.  I feel I have to reach the point of obesity before being help?  The latest diagnosis was that I may just have to live with, I certainly don't agree with that.  Any suggestions ~ yes I plan to change doctors as the last time I saw her she suggested I cut back on how much I am eating apparently ~ so much for listening skills.

I agree with revins...It sounds like your not eating enough to.  When you work out you have to eat a little more.  Your body thinks your starving if you dont.  Also drink the same amount of water daily.  80 ounces is generally the rule on your weight size.  Then lots of fruit and vegetables.  (apples, white grapes and oranges or lower in cal.).  They say to get the most out of the vegetables eat your daily allowance cooked and the other half raw.
Good Luck!

I just noticed that you said you do the SlimFast almost continuously.  Number one, it has a lot of sugar and artificial junk and preservatives in it which is not the best for you.  If I'm not mistaken, the sodium content (to preserve the stuff) is pretty high.  With Thyroid issues, we have to watch the sodium in some of the "health foods" out there as well as the sugar content in the "low fat" foods that help them not taste like dirt or tree bark.  Sodium makes you retain water, plus raises your blood pressure.  Sugar... well we KNOW what it does or we wouldn't be in the predicament we're in with the weight LOL!  Tastes good, but it is horrible for you.
Go the fruits and vegetables route.  Throw in a good natural-based high protein shake or bar.  Eat fish!  It's incredible stuff!  Or chicken!  And like I posted before, the b12 lipotropics really help give you the edge you need and they're safe to use, unlike some of the other options out there that people are choosing to use that aren't even FDA approved for weight loss.  At least the b12 and lipotropic amino acids are something your body will utilize and assist you.  B12 has several great health benefits besides energy... it's awesome.               God Bless!

Oh--and find another doctor.  I don't deal with non-listeners.

I just noticed your age, you might have hormonal shifts due to perimenopause or menopause.  Have some tests run to find out.

I am hypo and do not have any problems with my weight.
Are you on any other medications?  There are some meds that can cause weight gain--synthroid is not one of them.

Good luck figuring out what is wrong.

BTW, you need a diet of vegetables, lean meats, protein, and fiber.

Slim Fast is basically sugar.

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and told the same thing.  I had a growth on my Thyroid that was causing quite a bit a havoc.  Have they checked it out?
In the meantime, the had me start taking B6 and B12 (for energy and mental clarity) and Lipotropics and Adenosine (a group of amino acids that help support the liver and move the broken down fat out of the body).. I purchased them online, you can just google Lipoden or Lipotropics.  I steadily started losing weight and as of today have lost almost 26 pounds.  It's harder to lose weight while battling Thyroid issues, but thank goodness they've come out with things like I've mentioned to help us.  HTH
