Hit in eye

My son got hit in the eye with a basketball.  It bounced off the rim and hit him, knocked him down.  His eye is swollen shut, but when he forces it open, he says he see black & grey.  Is this something to be checked out immediately, or should we wait a few hours to see if he improves?

Before you go to an emergency room make sure they have an ophthalmologist on call, otherwise it will be a waste of time.
