CORNEA SCAR after LASIK

Hi,

I had LASIK done for both of my eyes last September 8 of this year. A day after the procedure, my left eye is perfectly well. But I knew that there was something wrong with my right eye. During my check-up after a week, my doctor confirmed that I have Diffuse Lamellar Keratitis on my right eye. It was treated immediately with Pred Forte drops (every hour) and Vigamox (4x/day). After a week, I felt that there was no improvement on my vision. I have halo, starbursts, ghost and blurred vision which really affected my life. My doctor told me that my DLK responded well to the steroid drops but I was a little frustrated because I can't feel the effect at all and becoming dizzy especially at work (using a computer) and at night on my way home with bright lights everywhere. It was almost a month after LASIK, and it is still the same. I went to Asian Eye Institute yesterday to seek for a second opinion. And there I got some answers. The DLK on my right eye is almost gone, but there is a scar on my cornea and it is in the middle (bulls eye) and this makes my life difficult now.I have nowhere to turn to since the specialist told me that I should just continue using Pred every hour and pray that this scar will respond to the treatment. I am desperate in seeking help. I just want to make my life brighter when I decided to undergo LASIK, but now- I'm becoming miserable thinking of what should I do next. Is my case hopeless? Are there cases similar like mine? What happened to the patients? Will the scar vanish over time? I am praying hard that I find a solution to this and that God bless me in my journey. Please help. Thanks.

Hi, we empathise with your agony. Your situation is definitely not a common occurrence, but it has been seen occasionally. You may taper the steroids on a weekly basis as advised. Cyclosporin may be continued if required. Lubricating eye drops are also recommended. It is extremely important that the exactb location , level and density of the opacity be dilineated and evaluated thoroughly.

I am no Doctor, but I do know that it is critical to slowly reduce the amount of steroid drops as opposed to just stopping them.

I just went to a Cornea Specialist earlier and she told me that it was not that bad. I can just feel it because it is right in the center of my Cornea. DLK is now healed, just the scar remaining. Usually, how long does it take for a connea scar to clear up? The doctor told me to lessen the steroids and just use it 4 times a day for 1 week, then lessen it to 3 x a day after another week. What do you think of this?

It should slowly get better on steroids.  However, not all case return to normal vision.
