Cost discussion for multi-focal lens

FYI: I live approx. 1 hour north of Tampa. Locally, around Crystal River, FL, the charge for a multi focal lens like Tecnis or Restor is between 2000 and 2300 per eye over and beyond what Medicare will pay.  Two hours south of me a friend had his cataract surgery and the Tecnis multi-focal lens implanted and was charged only 1550 for BOTH eyes.  I called that doctor a few minutes ago, his nurse told me he does NOT tacks on only the difference between the lens.  That may give you some idea of what we are talking about.  In Tampa, if a surgeon is using the Alcon LensX laser to do the cataract surgery, they charge from 3000 to 4000 per eye!!!!  There's no doubt the public is getting ripped in this process of "multi focal" lens. Trust me, there IS a form of price fixing, ALMOST every doctor is HIGH. They see it as a great way to make a lot of money quick because quite simply, what is your alternative?

My cataract surgeon had a price sheet which I believe said multifocals were an extra $1500 (above Medicare) per eye.  This is in a smaller town about 70 miles from Atlanta, GA.

It also said there was an extra $400 charge (above Medicare) per eye if you opted for near vision monofocal lenses instead of distance vision monofocals (which is what I chose).

I also chose the LenSx femtosecond laser surgery. I believe that was an extra $1000 per eye.  Then the assistant said he was going to give me a $400 per eye discount on the total price. I forgot to ask why.  It had to be that near vision surcharge.

I read somewhere that they always keep two duplicate lenses available during surgery in case something goes wrong with one (like maybe they drop it on the floor ? ;) ).  The powers of my lenses were 19.0 and 20.0 which are pretty common I think so maybe they had some in stock.

Or maybe he was so happy I went with the lenSX surgery he discounted.  Who knows?

In some cases I might agree with that statement, but I have 2 friends that had the surgery by the doctor in question--exact price per eye for the Tecnis multi-focal lens was $775.  I just spent time with them and they are both totally happy with the result.  I also talked to the doctor and his staff yesterday and by reputation he seems to be great.   Maybe it's just me and my sense of fair play, but I don't agree with an obscene markup on anything just because you have the market controlled. And that's exactly what we have here.  In my area, it's price fixing for certain.

So you want a Cadillac for a Chevy price.
You have a multitude of good ophthalmologists to choose from.  If you want the "lowest bidder"  for your vision, I think you are in for trouble.
