Diagnosed with Superior Limbic Keratoconjunctivitis

I've had severe red eyes for almost 2 years and today was diagnosed with Superior Limbic Keratoconjunctivitis. This was the first time I'd consulted a doctor/opthamologist in that regard.

The opthamologist prescribed a course of Maxidex to be taken every 2 hours as well as Patanol, which is to be taken twice a day.

However, having read most of the available online literature with regards to this condition, it appears that the use of topical cortico-steroids is not effective and may actually cause some other problems.

I'm also not keen on using the steroids unless it is 100% necessary and will be beneficial towards treatment of the problem.

The opthamologist did ask whether I had thyroid problems but never suggested I should have a thyroid panel carried out (I'm a 26 year old male). From what I've read, the general consensus is that anyone with SLK should have their thyroid checked immediately.

I got both eye drops from the pharmacist, but so far have not used them, as I'm quite apprehensive and don't feel completely comfortable with taking them (especially Maxidex).

Is it standard for both of these to be prescrivbed for new SLK patients? I've to go back again in 2 weeks time for a review.

Any advice/points of view on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
