Eyes crossing involuntarily

What is going on? My eyes started crossing involuntarily.
My first experience was at work on a break, I was walking with a co worker and suddenly both eyes crossed and frightened me I could not see and had to alert her and we sat down. It did not go away seemed like forever but most likely 30 seconds. Never had another until this morning, was reading and got up to get something from a file cabinet when I bent down a little my right eye crossed. I closed the crossed eye and opened my other and could see clearly to sit down and relax for it to subside. I did not have a headache with it nor anything else.
I am perplexed by this because 1. it is frightening 2. dont know why it is happening 3. dont know when it will happen again.

This discussion is related to Sudden Cross-eyed Vision NOT double vision.

This started happening to me regularly.  It stopped when I started taking a powdered collagen in my coffee.  Collagen is supposed to replace the collagen you lose with age.  I never expected it to fix this problem that had been going on for over a year.  Surprise surprise, didn't need a doctor.

dlupo:  start working with the ophthalmologist in your insurance plan to get authorization for an out of plan referral to a neuro-ophthalmologists. Many insurance plans do not have every type of medical or sugical subspecialist. When doctors in the plan can't handle the problem there is a protocol for getting them to authorize a referral to a doctor (in your case a neuro-ophthalmologist) out of the plan. It always requires that one of the doctors in the plan recommend the referral.  If you are in your late 30's or early-mid 40's your symptoms could be due to "presbyopia" and indicate a need for reading glasses or bifocals.

I am having the same type of problem with my eyes not being able to focus & see correctly. Right eye appears/feels like it is crossing. Have to push & try to purposely focus/strain to see. Very frustrating as I work in medical field; use computers all the time ,as well as in school, making it very difficult to function. It is intermittent in nature; exacerbated by chronic dry eyes. Use drops, ointments & have had tear duct plugs. Opthamologist doesn't know what it is; recommended going to a Neuro-Opthamologist. Having difficulty finding one in my insurance network.I am frustrated & perplexed.

Yesterday, my husband and I went shopping . He decided that I drivedrive. A few minutes later ,all of a sudden my eyes seemed to go crossed and I was in heavy traffic. I tried very hard to keep focused on the side of the road . But it was difficultand almost made me disoriented. Fortunately,it lasted only about a minute. This is not the only time this has happened while driving. But it has also happened at home just walking from room to room. It seems to last a little longer each time. I had lasic eye surgery in 2001and I am now 58 years old.

I have had the feeling of cross eyes but not actually crossing, vision is clear when i close one eye. Had appt with eye dr, prescribed prisms on glasses...aged related, muscle weakness. I had also been experiencing peripheral vision issues, bumping head frequently, but tested positive for depth perception problems. My dr is clarke newman in dallas.
