I don't think that macular scarring can be treated. (Maybe stem cell research will someday lead to a solution.) Changes in the photoreceptor distribution of the retina (caused by conditions such as an epiretinal membrane) can produce the sort of distortion that you experience when using your "bad" eye only. If the distortion disappears when you use both eyes together, I think that you have found a good solution to the problem. My experience is similar to yours, and I'm really grateful that my brain has learned to screen out the distorted image from my "bad" eye. If you use progressive glasses, you should have undistorted vision at all distances.
