doc sees "dots" in eyes during exam, what could they be?

I am writing about my elderly mother, who went for an eye exam. She said he said he saw dots in her eyes but didn't know what they were. He didn't say "floaters," which he no doubt would be able to identify. She is concerned & I guess I would like any input as to what he might have seen & what her next step should be.  Thank you, in advance.
