Infection/scratch in eye causing vision to worsen

I'm trying to help my sibling out who's been having this issue for the past couple of months.  She is literally at her wits end and i only recently found out how severe it was.

A couple of months ago she had an what was initially a scratch in her eye and became infected.  The scratch/infection would not heal and her vision has been progressively getting worse and worse.  Now, she can barely see out of her one eye and can only see bright lights.  She avoids the light as it's too painful for her eye.

She's been to more than 5 ophthalmologists and they are all stumped and cannot find the root cause.  She's been prescribed antibiotics and I'm assuming she's taken medication for both bacterial and viral infections.

I've never heard of this and am wondering what could possibly be going on?

A scratch on the surface of the eye and problems it causes is not a difficult diagnostic problem. It is almost inconceivable that 5 ophthalmologists have not been able to determine the problem.  Perhaps she has a problem and difficulty with understanding and comprehension of medical explanations? Perhaps someone should go with her to listen to the ophthalmologist. Where does she live maybe I can give you the name of the best referral center in that area.

Hi Dr. Hagan, thank you for the response.  I also do not understand how after visiting 5 ophthamologists, she was not able to get a straight answer.

She lives in the Northern New Jersey/New York city area.  If you have any great referral centers, I would truly appreciate it.

Thank you once again.

New York Eye & Ear is excellent.  Link http://www.nyee.edu/     If that doesn't work out she would need to see an eye  MD ophthalmologist that specializes in cornea diseases.   Something just doesn't sound right.
