High myopia in 2 year old

According to the ophthalmologist we just saw for my 2.5 year old, he is highly myopia (-7 each eye) and he asked if he was premature or being followed for a syndrome, because otherwise, this is very uncommon. How concerned should I be? Should I push for a ped. ophthalmologist? Should I push for testing from the ped.? He also said it was fine to be followed now by just the optometrist - is this enough?

You should be very concerned. Yes I would get a second opinion and perhaps ongoing care from a pediatric ophthalmologist as they have more tools available for treating. No followed by an optometrist is bad advice. If you have other children be sure they are checked as this runs in families often. Push hard for a pediatric ophthalmologist.
