Vision Issues after Retinal Detachment Surgery
Hello, I had Retinal Detachment Surgery with Macula Off and then 2 weeks later my retina detached again due to scar tissue. It has been abou 9 or 10 weeks since my last surgery. I have been having a type of double vision, More halos and shadows but definitely 2 images. If I cover one or the other eye it goes away but with both eyes I have issues. Driving is sometimes scarey and I can't drive at night. I got my new glasses but they didn't help much with this issue.. What are your thoughts, will it get better? I had a great surgeon but he is not a real communicator. He will answer questions but it is like pulling teeth and I don't know all the questions I should be asking.

A year ago, I had a retinal tear, cryopexy, gas bubble, and laser retinopexy. Although I didn't have macula off, my experience may offer some insight. I have retinal induced anisiekonia and dragged fovea diplopia syndrome. My double vision is worse at distance. Images are 13 % smaller in my left eye. The good news is that there is a simple solution: obscuring central vision in one eye with a small square of Scotch Satin Tape. See

Your problem and that of CBCT are entirely different. CBCT has monocular symptoms. As I understand it if she covers her bad eye things look fine. If she covers her good eye she sees distortion, ghosting, metamorphosia in the bad eye.
You are having true double vision in that you see 2 distinct images and with covering each eye in turn the doubling goes away. Double vision following RD surgery is relatively common. In some instances it clears up without treatment and that is what we hope would happen to you. If you are still symptomatic 8-12 weeks after surgery you should ask the retina surgeon to refer you to a strabismus surgeon (eye muscle) specialist.
It is a bad idea to cover one eye with a patch all the time as the double vision actually stimulates the brain to try and realign the muscles. Given your un-communicative surgeon if you are still seeing double next visit insist he get a consult with a strabismus specialist. You can also go to www.geteyesmart.org and find one near you and of course there are some a U of MN and Mayo's

As a point of clarification, my bad eye does not have ghosting or significant distortion. If I cover my good eye, I can see well however images are smaller because of a macular pucker. Binocular vision at distance is disorienting due to poor central fusion caused by the difference in image size. The small piece of frosted tape applied to the inside of the glasses lens of the bad eye blurs central vision, thus forcing me to use peripheral vision which can fuse.
