One of the most important examinations is the first and it is often neglected. The eyes mature from birth to about age 6.  If vision is reduced in one eye and not improve with an appropriate glasses RX it has amblyopia. This is treated with patching the stronger eye and wearing glasses. Sometimes eye muscle surgery is required. If this is not begun prior to age 5-6 the success rate is very low. Thus an apparent normal child should either be examined by an ophthalmologist about age 2 1/2 to 3 or screened by an optometrist  or pediatrician.  A repeat exam about age 5-6 is also desirable.  After than if there are specific eye complaints and perhaps every 2-3 years.  After age 40 an exam every year or two and after 65 yearly.   If there are compliants of family history of eye problems more frequent exams may be indicated.
