The risk of retinal detachment is minimal after 3 months.  You should however, be seen if there is an increase in floaters.

So I guess I am wondering if it takes years in some cases to completely go thru the PVD process would there any danger of a retinal detachment or just something a eye DR needs to keep an eye on?

It varies a lot.  Most are fairly complete in 3 months.  However, I have seen patients continue with flashes for years.  This indicated the vitreous is stuck to the retinal at a certain area.
