disc cupping

does the disc to cup ratio give you the depth of the cup? for example .3 would be size of the cup to the disc what about the depth of it. Can you have a big cup but no deepth? Also is a cup and crater the same thing? Please explain how this work? thanks

Some people do not have cups and therefore there is no depression. Such eyes are recorded as C/D  0.0    a cup is by definition a depression so everyone with cupping 0.1 to 1.0 has depressions that get bigger as the c/d gets bigger

My question is does everyone have a cup and does everyone have depression in their cup or is most cups people are flat. My Doctor said based off my optos pictures that I have mild cupping. I'm about a .3.

Dr. Hagan,

I know you mentioned its normal to have a cup. My questions is it normal to have a slight depression in the cup or are most optic nerve flat?

Thanks

crater is not a term used in ophthalmology

but the cup can be thought of as a crater in the optic nerve

ITS NORMAL to have a cup. Glaucoma make a cup larger, since people have different size cups it is often difficult to tell if glaucoma caused increased cupping or if that's what it looks like normally

Is cupping and crater the samething?

If you have a crater in your optic nerve does that means there is a depression in the nerve?

No it tell you nothing about depth anymore than by looking at a pond can you tell how deep it is.
