tinted IOL for Mydriasis?

I had an eye injury earlier this year that caused traumatic mydriasis. The pupil does respond to light but always remains about 3 to 4 mm greater diameter than the other eye. A traumatic cataract is now developing and I expect surgery will be required soon to remove the cataract and hopefully fit an IOL. My consultant has mentioned doing something to help with the mydriasis at the same time. The cataract has had a benefit in that it limits the light into my eye and therefore helps with the mydriasis. This has made me think that maybe a tinted IOL would be a good idea as this would limit the light into the eye and may be less intrusive than some of the iris reconstruction devices available. Are tinted IOLs available and do you think one would help? Are there any other surgical options that may be better? Feedback from the doctors or anyone who has had similar surgery is much appreciated.

You might like to check with the Cincinnati Eye Institute (google and check out their website).  The opthalmologists there specialize in iris repair and might give you info. regarding a surgical solution that can be done at the same time as cataract surgery.  I am going to have a surgeon there perform an iris repair and cataract surgery simultaneously.

NO they can't make IOLs like that as the FDA in the USA or other regulatory agencies elsewhere do not allow them to do this.  The tint on IOLs is generally a very very pale yellow. It will not act like a sun glass.

Have you ever known IOL manufacturers make custom lenses or of a case where a tinted IOL was used for this purpose? Maybe a more heavily tinted lens could be made. As my pupil does move a little I would prefer not having it stitched into a fixed positon. Thanks agian for your time and expertise on this site.

Tinted IOLs are not like contacts and the tint is only minor and to help with filtering UV and infrared light spectra.  Talk to the surgeon about doing surgery at the same time to make the pupil somewhat smaller.
